Melbourne led the robust overall activity across all auction markets over the past weekend, according to the latest report from CoreLogic.

The Victorian capital hosted 1,094 auctions during the period, which returned a success rate of 80.3%. The level of activity in the city recovered from a slump during the preceding weekend, which was affected by the public holiday.

Overall, 2,232 homes went under the hammer during the period, returning a success rate of 83.2%.

Of all capital cities, Perth achieved the highest clearance rate, with all 17 auctions being sold over the weekend.

Sydney remained busy, hosting 817 auctions and hitting a clearance rate of 87.4%. The city is expected to report its sixth consecutive week of having a final clearance rate of above 80%. One year ago, 767 auctions were held in the city and 68.1% sold.

Among small markets, Canberra performed the best, achieving a success rate of 95% for the 92 auctions.

In terms of property types, houses remained the top choice for auction hunters. Clearance rates for this type of property have remained above 80% for seven consecutive weeks. Units on the other hand, have an average auction rate of 70% over the same period.
