Dwelling approvals increased by 7% in August, in seasonally adjusted terms, after a 7.4% drop in July, according to the latest figures from ABS.
“Approvals for private sector houses rose by 5.8%, following three months of stable movements,” said Daniel Rossi, ABS head of construction statistics. “Approvals in the more volatile ‘private sector dwellings excluding houses’ series rose by 9.4%, following a 14.6% fall in July.”
Total dwelling approvals across states were varied. Increases were recorded in Victoria (+22.2%), New South Wales (+12.5%), and Western Australia (+12.3%), while declines were posted in Queensland (-26.9%), Tasmania (-10.1%), and South Australia (-6.9%).
Approvals for private sector houses increased in all states, with Western Australia leading the gains at +13%, followed by Victoria (+9.9%), South Australia (+4.7%), Queensland (+3.1%), and New South Wales (+2.4%).
The value of total building approvals lifted 0.5% in August, after a 16% drop the month prior. Total residential building saw its value increase by 2.3%, comprising a 3.2% lift in new residential building and a 2.4% fall in alterations and additions.
The value of non-residential building approved, meanwhile, had a 1.5% decline in August, following a decrease of 26.9% in July.
