One of Australia’s largest broker groups is to donate more than 10,000 meals to OzHarvest charities this Christmas, helping to feed people in need over the festive period.
Brokers with Aussie Home Loans have prepared more than 200 food hampers and provided almost 400 premium leg hams for OzHarvest charities, in addition to making cash donations. Their contributions will provide more than 5,500 meals, with CEO James Symond donating an additional 5,000 meals on behalf of Aussie’s industry and business partners.
The donations mark 20 years of Aussie Home Loans feeding people in need at Christmas through a number of charity initiatives.
James Symond commented “We’re really proud to be celebrating 20 years of supporting Australians through food donations, after starting with one charity in 1998 with the Exodus Foundation’s Christmas Day lunch in Sydney.”
In April this year, the group extended its commitment to OzHarvest until 2020, following its participation in the charity’s Cooking for a Cause program, Night Noodle Markets and CEO Cook Off.
“Our whole team has embraced our Christmas initiatives and our partnership with OzHarvest, now in its third year, and participate in these activities with genuine enthusiasm”, Symond added.
Many of Aussie’s 220 stores across Australia are also participating in Christmas food drives for OzHarvest and making donations to their local charities.
OzHarvest is Australia’s leading “food rescue” organisation, collecting more than 180 tonnes of quality excess food from donors Australia-wide each week. In addition to the CSR donations it receives, OzHarvest receives food from supermarkets, hotels, airports, wholesalers, farmers, corporate events, catering companies, shopping centres, delis, cafes, restaurants, and film and TV shoots.
Recently the organisation opened Australia’s first “rescued food supermarket” – the OzHarvest Market in Sydney, based on a ‘take what you need, give if you can’ philosophy.
OzHarvest founder and CEO, Ronni Kahn, said “We love the great contribution the Aussie team make to OzHarvest each year, especially at Christmas when there are so many people struggling to put food on the table. The hams are always big hit with the charities we support.”
