It’s not often that an entire town is put on the market but that’s exactly what’s on offer in one Victorian rural hamlet – and it will only set you back a few million dollars.

Australia’s own ‘Schitt’s Creek’ is up for sale, with the rare opportunity to purchase an entire town for the same price as a Melbourne house.

The Netflix comedy series Schitt’s Creek was based on the rich and glamorous Rose family, who purchased the town of Schitt’s Creek as a joke, but were forced to relocate to the remote town full of quirky characters after their family business went bankrupt.

Now prospective buyers have the chance to buy their own small country town – Coopers Creek, about 180km east of Melbourne. The town has been listed for sale and it includes a charming historical pub (pictured above).

Set on 4.4ha on the Thomson River, Coopers Creek is a former mining township settled during the Victorian gold rush in the 1800s.

Listing agent Ian Mason (pictured immediately below), of Mason White McDougall, said Coopers Creek was once home to a population of approximately 250 people.

“The town was purchased by the Holyoak family bit by bit from the 1960s after they fell in love with the idyllic riverside locale,” Mason said. “The town sale consists of 21 lots ranging in size from 660sqm to over 12,000sqm, including a fully equipped pub with pool room, dining area, stage, open fireplaces and a commercial kitchen, as well as a two-bedroom home with beautiful views from the veranda.”

Mason said it was hard to put a price on an entire town, however he expected it might sell for around $2.5m to $3m, which he said was about the same price as a single house in Kew or Hawthorn.

“If you have ever wanted to own your own town or be the mayor of your own domain, this is the place for you,” he said. “Whether it’s setting up a tourism business or a desire to live off grid immersed in nature, Coopers Creek offers endless opportunities including a break from city life and a change of scenery in one of Victoria’s most pristine natural environments.”

Mason said with its picturesque location, nestled in the mountains near Walhalla and surrounded by beautiful bushland on the Thomson River, the town was a haven for bushwalkers, 4WD enthusiasts, kayakers, fishermen and horse riders.

“Coopers Creek has mostly been used for camping, adventure holidays and music festivals in recent times,” he said. “Like the Rose family in Schitt’s Creek, Coopers Creek could be a life-changing move for the right buyer.”
