ANZ has promoted Mark Evans as its new country head of Singapore, as well as the head of South East Asia, India and Middle East, effective immediately.
Evans (pictured above) will relocate from Sydney to Singapore in May and report to Simon Ireland, international managing director at ANZ. The appointment is still subject to regulatory approval.
Prior to joining ANZ, Evans held senior roles at HSBC, first overseeing its trade and supply chain business in Australia, and later in Hong Kong in a leadership capacity across Asia-Pacific. Earlier in his career, he worked at National Australia Bank (NAB), Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) and St George.
“Singapore is a critical market for the bank given its status as a key financial hub and gateway location for the world’s largest multinational companies with trade and capital flows across ASEAN,” Ireland said. “As one of our most experienced banking executives in both our home markets and in Asia, Mark is well placed to drive strategic opportunities, growth and value for our business and our customers.”
Evans replaces Vishnu Shahaney, who is set to wait to retire until July to ensure a smooth transition. Shahaney spent four decades of his career with ANZ, three years of which was as the country head of Singapore and the head of South East Asia, India and Middle East.
“Vishnu is a true veteran of our business and the banking industry across the region,” Ireland said. “The leadership team at ANZ thanks him for his significant contribution over many years and wish him well for the future.”
