ANZ has announced the appointment of a new chief executive officer.
Philip Chronican will step down as the chief executive of the major's Australian operations to pursue a non-executive career after 32 years in banking. Mark Whelan will be taking up the mantle, reporting to the bank's group chief executive, Mike Smith.
Currently managing director of global commercial banking, Whelan has been on the ANZ Management Board since October 2014.
Formerly, he held the position as managing director of institutional APEA in Hong Kong, responsible for institutional, commercial and private banking across Asia Pacific, Europe and America.
“ANZ’s focus on developing internal talent with deep experience in our major domestic markets and in Asia makes Mark’s appointment a natural next step,” said Smith.
“He knows Australia and Asia well, and has a track record of delivering for shareholders and for customers.”
Chief executive of ANZ's New Zealand operations David Hisco will also take on Chronican’s responsibilities as global head of retail.
“I’m also pleased to have David take responsibility for Global Retail,” Smith said.
“We have been very successful in New Zealand since the brand merger and his experience in using common approaches and common systems will help create further value in retail in Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific.”
Both positions will commence 3 April 2015.
