The Retirement Living Council (RLC) has expressed its approval of the Australian government’s decision to postpone the start date of the new Aged Care Act.

The move, according to RLC executive director Daniel Gannon (pictured above), opens a vital window for necessary adjustments and consultations.

“This is the best news we’ve had on this front for months,” Gannon said, highlighting the challenges faced in the bill’s consultation process and the importance of getting the legislation right.

Anika Wells, minister for aged care, said the government is currently reviewing feedback to refine the draft legislation – a crucial step for addressing the complexities and ensuring the act meets its goals of enhancing aged care services in Australia.

Support for aged care sector

Gannon underscored the retirement living sector’s support for the government's commitment to reforming aged care. He praised the bill’s consumer-focused approach, which aims to uphold the dignity of older Australians while promoting innovation and sustainability in care provision.

“The aged care system is failing to keep up with current demand,” he said in a media release, emphasizing the need for reforms to accommodate the anticipated “silver tsunami” due to demographic shifts.

With Australia’s ageing population expected to surge, RLC calls for reforms that encourage innovative care models to address the expected 70% increase in the population aged over 75 in the next decade and a half.

The RLC has made eight key recommendations in its submission, which can be accessed here, aiming to shape a future-ready aged care system that can effectively meet the growing demand.
