Australia’s total construction work done in the June quarter rose by a modest 0.1% to $64.93 billion, according to preliminary estimates, ABS reported.
The rise was primarily driven by a 0.5% increase in engineering work, which reached $31.12 billion. Despite this growth, the trend estimate for total construction work done saw a decline of 0.4%.
Engineering construction work was the standout, rising 0.5% in the June quarter and 4.8% compared to the same time last year. The growth in this sector helped balance the decline seen in other areas of construction, ABS reported.
Building work performed poorly, with a 0.3% drop to $33.82bn. This decline was driven by a 0.5% reduction in non-residential building work.
“Non-residential work is 0.9% lower than at the same time last year,” ABS said.
Residential building work also fell by 0.1% and is 2.9% lower than in the same period last year.
State and territory data showed mixed results. While total construction work fell in New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory, other regions, including Victoria and Queensland, saw growth in construction activity.
