The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has welcomed Clare O’Neil (pictured above) as the new minister for housing and homelessness in the restructured Albanese Government Cabinet.
REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella highlighted the importance of addressing Queensland’s housing issues.
“Queensland’s housing and homelessness challenges are in the spotlight as we attract the focus of the nation and the world as the Olympics nears,” Mercorella said.
She emphasised the need to discuss federal housing policies with O’Neil, given the state’s unique challenges.
Mercorella pointed out that Queensland has a lower homeownership rate and a higher rental population compared to the national average.
“The composition of Queensland housing sees those renters relying heavily on private investors to put a roof over their head,” she said.
Mercorella also noted the significant pressure on the private rental market and emergency housing resources.
“There is also added strain in the private rental market and on emergency housing resources, due to a social housing average wait time of almost two and a half years, while homelessness remains prevalent in our streets and parks,” she said.
Mercorella thanked outgoing Minister Julie Collins for her efforts.
“We thank Julie Collins for her ambitious housing agenda and look forward to reconnecting regarding the small business element of her portfolio,” Mercorella said.
Collins will continue to serve as the minister for agriculture, fisheries, and forestry.
