Pepper Money was among those within the industry to take a time out to check in on the mental health of its broker partners last week, in the spirit of R U OK? Day.

Given its sponsorship of St Kilda Football Club, the lender was able to invite accredited mortgage brokers to participate in a mindfulness event facilitated by the club’s sports psychologist and former professional AFL footballer, Dr Ben Robbins.

Aaron Milburn, Pepper Money GM of mortgages and commercial lending, expressed pride in being able to leverage the lender’s connection to the club to help brokers and their families navigate the unique and overwhelming challenges of 2020.

“Mental health is something that I’m personally quite passionate about,” he said.

Nearly 400 brokers tuned into the virtual session to hear about the techniques St Kilda employs to look after the mental health of its players. Dr Robbins addressed common myths about mindfulness and explored ways that brokers and their families can apply effective and simple practices to get a better handle on everyday situations. He also shared practical tips around managing focus and shifting negative thoughts.

According to Milburn, feedback from the day has been “overwhelming positive”, with Dr Robbins’ thoughts on mindfulness “even [winning] over a few sceptics”.

“Many brokers commented on how relevant the session was for today’s environment. Many felt it would help them better manage stress at work and at home,” Milburn said.

One broker viewed his participation in the event as “very worthwhile”.

“[It was] refreshing to attend a webinar that helps our mindset rather than bank policy and product info,” they said.

“The presenter was excellent and kept me interested in a subject that I thought I had no interest in,” another viewer added.
