Melbourne's auction market had reported its second busiest weekend of the year so far, pushing Australia's overall auction activity, according to the latest figures from CoreLogic.

Over the weekend, 1,414 homes went into auction in the Victorian capital. This level of activity has put Melbourne at the top of the list again in terms of auction activity, after weeks of being second to Sydney. Of all auctions hosted in Melbourne, 75.9% went to a sale.

Sydney continued to outpace Melbourne in terms of the share of successful sales at 81.8%. However, the city hosted only 1,101 auctions during the weekend, down from the predicted count, as a result of the late lockdown on Saturday afternoon.

Among smaller cities, Brisbane reported the highest activity with 177 auctions while Canberra registered the highest clearance rate at 87.8%.

Overall, auction volumes across Australia increased to 2,976, which returned a clearance rate of 77.5%, slightly lower than last week's 77.8%.
