Housing crisis: councils graded on performance

Western Sydney local government areas (LGAs) are leading the way in addressing the housing crisis, according to new research by Housing Now!

Its latest report card assessed the performance of Greater Sydney’s 32 local councils in meeting housing demand, and councils in Western Sydney scored the highest, while North Sydney councils struggled to meet targets.

Blacktown and Fairfield were standout performers, earning A grades for their housing completions and fast-tracked development approvals.

“Our report card simply lays out which councils are at the top of the class and those needing to improve,” said Housing Now! chair David Borger (pictured above).

Some councils lag behind in approvals

While Western Sydney LGAs performed well, councils in North Sydney, including Willoughby, Mosman, and Ku-ring-gai, received failing grades.

These areas were cited for low housing approvals and poor contributions to social and affordable housing targets.

“Some councils need to stop focusing on how they can say no, and start asking why not,” said Estelle Grech, housing spokesperson for the Committee for Sydney. “Mosman, with only 16 homes built in 12 months, needs to step up to its modest target of 100 homes a year.”

Housing crisis still looms despite progress

While some councils made significant strides, the report found that only one-third of councils passed with a C grade or higher.

The Housing Now! research highlighted that 80% of Sydney’s councils are still failing to meet local demand for social and affordable housing.

“The stakes are simply too high to maintain the status quo,” Borger said, stressing the need for all levels of government to address the ongoing housing crisis in Sydney.
