A new report by aggregator Finsure Group has revealed that residential mortgage brokers settling around 100 loans per year are seeing measurable benefits from maintaining a well-balanced and diversified lending portfolio.

According to Finsure’s data analysis, brokers working with approximately 15 different lenders tend to achieve the most consistent success, with the variety offering both flexibility and enhanced client servicing. Finsure CEO Simon Bednar said that while diversification is key, the analysis shows that having more lender options doesn’t necessarily equate to better results.

“This balanced approach suggests that these brokers benefit from a diversified portfolio without spreading themselves too thin, enabling them to offer varied products while maintaining strong lender relationships,” Bednar said.

He noted that a focused yet varied lending panel enables brokers to match clients with competitive products while still nurturing strategic ties with banks.

“Our analysis found ‘more’ isn’t necessarily better when it comes to lenders,” Bednar said. “It’s about finding the right mix of lenders that gives the mortgage brokers in our network access to leading products, whilst also offering new opportunities for them to tap into a new client base.”

Finsure highlighted the importance of fostering a relaxed environment for lender education. Bednar pointed to the recent addition of HSBC as an example, noting that many brokers initially lacked experience with the lender.

“It’s only after brokers have attended the follow up masterclasses or our coffee clusters that they really started to understand what clients use,” he said.

The findings also extend to asset finance brokers. Finsure head of diversified partnerships Damien Thompson noted that these brokers often hold strong preferences for specific lenders, making continued engagement crucial during early onboarding.

“The follow up during the first three months of joining are crucial to brokers embracing the new lender and unlocking more for their business,” Thompson said.
