The total number of dwellings approved in Australia rose by 10.4% in July, reaching 14,797, following a 6.4% decline in June, according to ABS data.
“Private dwellings excluding houses rose 32.1% after a low June result,” said Daniel Rossi, ABS head of construction statistics.
Private sector house approvals increased by 0.6% in July, largely driven by an 8.5% rise in New South Wales. Meanwhile, results were mixed across other states, with Queensland and Victoria experiencing declines, while South Australia and Western Australia saw gains.
Private sector dwellings, excluding houses, saw a significant 32.1% increase, with high-density apartment approvals in nine or more storey blocks jumping from 533 in June to 2,504 in July, ABS reported.

The total value of building approvals rose by 6.8% to $13.18 billion, led by a 9.0% increase in residential building, with new residential constructions up by 11.8%. However, alterations and additions fell by 6.8% following a record high in June.
